I am an anthropologist with extensive fieldwork experience in Lebanon and Germany. Currently, I am working on two projects: sound archives and their entangled legacies, and a book on temporality, heritage and loss in Beirut. I have published in various collections and journals, including the International Journal of Heritage Studies, Visual Anthropology Review and the Review of Middle East Studies. Beyond publishing, I have produced diverse media, including a sound installation at the Amsterdam Museum.
Prior to becoming an anthropologist, I trained as a political scientist, interpreter and human rights consultant. I studied anthropology at the University of Edinburgh, the Polish Academy of Sciences and University College London. Also, I have been awarded several fellowships, including at the Free University of Berlin, the American University of Beirut, the Orient Institut Beirut, and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
My postdoctoral research, as part of CARMAH’s flagship Making Differences project, was primarily concerned with participation, belonging and difference. It entailed ethnographic fieldwork on a collaborative project between a state museum and a local collective, as well as research on a slam poetry group of young Muslims and creative ways in which they negotiate their belonging in Germany. While working on the project, I also published the book Islam and Heritage in Europe: Pasts, Presents and Future Possibilities, with Sharon Macdonald and Mirjam Shatanawi (see also here and here).
In addition, I was a managing editor of CARMAH’s Reflections series from 2018 to 2020.
